ABOUT

MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Our Mission is to establish, operate, and maintain a residence and stable enviroment for homless youth (16-24 years old) and youth in crisis.

Our Objectives are to provide counselling, encouragment, and support for youth in order to assist them in their transition to becoming independent members of the community.

Who Are We

The Next Door is not a group home or institution of any kind. We offer a safe home, basic needs, and caring people. All our professional services are accessed within the community. We will be supporters and advocates to secure any required services youth may need.

The Next Door is a place to call home. For the time youth are with us, it is their home. The place they come to every night to share a family dinner,  participate in chores and study-time, share smiles & laughs, celebrations, compassion during rough days, and of course rules, responsibilities, and structure. Family comes in many forms, this one is for them.

What To Expect

Abstinence – youth who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol cannot stay at The Next Door.

When youth arrive at our door they are making a decision to make a positive change in their lives. They will be welcomed by caring staff and volunteers. Immediate needs will be taken care of: food, hygiene, clothing, medical needs if required.

The next step is to establish if The Next Door is the most appropriate support service, after assessing if other options are possible such as: the youth returning home with support; staying with other supportive family members; or attending a withdrawal program.

Within 72 hours the youth will sit down with staff to discuss their circumstances, needs, and goals. Together we will create a Life Plan and Agreement. The youth must attend school, work, and participate in workshops, training, or a combination of these. Youth can remain at The Next Door for up to 1 year by honouring their Life Plan and Agreement and by meeting the expectations set out for all youth in the home.
